5 foods to FUEL your training session

A few weeks ago we talked about if Gatorade was really necessary for you to consume before, during, and after a work out.

Today we’re going to share with you 5 foods to fuel your body before a workout.

No one wants to work out on an empty stomach right?!

Raisins These can really make a difference when consumed before a workout! Before working out you want to consume simple easy to digest carbohydrates. Raisins are just that plus some vitamins, minerals, and fiber which are all helpful for athletes!

Whole wheat bagel or toast with a drizzle of honey Just like the raisins, these foods will digest quickly in your body so you have energy throughout your entire training session. The bagel and honey combo gives you both types of carbs.

Oatmeal Early morning session? No problem! Grab a bowl of oatmeal for before your workout. It’ll keep you FULL and ENERGIZED through the entire session. BONUS if you add in some fresh fruit… It’ll get into your bloodstream faster and get you going!

Legumes (a.k.a. beans and lentils) These little bites contain lots of protein as well as complex carbs. Both are important for a slow-release of energy, which make them optimal for workouts that are long duration or will take place 1-2 hours after you’ve eaten. Use CAUTION…gas pains can occur if you eat too many, so limit portion sizes and consume legumes at other times to get your body used to them

Fruit Smoothie This is a great option because you can add whatever you’d like to your smoothie (stay tuned to future blogs for recipes!). Some ideas: low-fat or non-fat yogurt, banana, peanut butter, blueberries, or anything else you can think of! The possibilities and benefits are endless!

A general guideline is to eat a pre-workout meal 45 minutes to an hour before.

If you’ve never tried one of these foods before, make sure you try it when you are not about to go into a competition since you don’t know how your body will react.

You should only consume foods you are familiar with before a workout or competition.

So next time you head to the grocery store, remember to add these items to your bag!

They’ll keep you full and energized throughout your ENTIRE workout or training session so you can power through and unleash the beast!
